CELALMEX: Mexico’s New Green Gold

In Mexico, the pineapple industry produces approximately 480 tons of organic waste per hectare annually, posing a significant environmental challenge. In response, CELALMEX, a biotech company founded in February 2021 by young Mexican entrepreneurs, has developed an innovative solution: converting this waste into eco-friendly cellulose and biodegradable bioplastics.

CELALMEX’s technology enables the production of sustainable raw materials like cellulose and starch from agricultural waste, especially pineapple residues. This approach not only reduces waste accumulation but also offers eco-friendly alternatives to traditional materials, lowering reliance on non-renewable resources and helping mitigate plastic pollution.

Beyond the environmental impact, CELALMEX generates economic benefits for local farmers. By transforming pineapple waste into valuable products, producers earn additional income for every kilogram of processed residue, promoting a circular economy that strengthens rural communities.

Currently, CELALMEX is securing investment to build an industrial plant in Veracruz, with a projected capacity of 24 tons of pineapple cellulose per month. This progress will position Mexico as a leader in bioplastics and sustainable material production, driving innovation and sustainability in the industrial sector.

CELALMEX’s journey is a testament to the potential of Mexican youth to tackle environmental challenges through creative and sustainable solutions. Their work not only contributes to environmental conservation but also opens new economic opportunities and promotes more equitable, responsible development.
