We analyze the complex history of the State of Israel and the fundamental role that Hamas plays in the current conflict. The creation of Israel, proclaimed on May 14, 1948, was the result of a long process that intensified after the Holocaust and the growing persecution of Jews in Europe. This desire to establish a national home for the Jewish people was supported by the Balfour Declaration of 1917 and the UN resolution in 1947, which proposed the partition of Palestine. However, this resolution was rejected by Arab leaders, triggering the first Arab-Israeli war immediately after the declaration of independence.

The history of the conflict cannot be understood without mentioning the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood, founded in 1928. This movement has been a key actor in the politics of the region, promoting political Islam that has influenced various groups, including Hamas. Founded in 1987, Hamas is characterized by its militant approach and its rejection of the existence of the State of Israel. Its goal is not only the liberation of Palestine but also the creation of an Islamic state in the region, utilizing violence as one of its main strategies. This approach not only affects Israel but also has repercussions for the stability of the entire region and potentially for many countries worldwide.

The surprise attack carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 people and the taking of more than 200 hostages, marked a turning point in this conflict. This attack not only unleashed a strong military response from Israel but also highlighted Hamas's strategy of using its own citizens as human shields. This tactic endangers the lives of Palestinians in Gaza and complicates the international perception of the conflict, as images of civilians caught in the violence generate an emotional response that often translates to sympathy for Hamas instead of the situation in Israel.

It is crucial to note that the media narrative surrounding this conflict is often distorted. Media coverage can overly simplify the complexity of the situation, presenting Israel as the aggressor without providing the historical context and motivations behind Hamas's actions. This lack of accurate information contributes to many people being misinformed about the reality of the conflict, which in turn fuels polarization and misunderstandings. Misinformation can have serious consequences, as it forms opinions that do not reflect the situation's complexity or Israel's legitimate struggle for existence and security.

As we delve deeper into the history and current tensions between Israel and Palestine, it becomes evident that the narrative of the conflict is much more complex than is often presented. Israel's story is one of resilience and the quest for legitimacy in a hostile environment. However, hope lies in the possibility of a future where dialogue and mutual understanding are prioritized. Despite the challenges, the desire for peace and coexistence persists among many in the region.

With a renewed commitment to diplomacy and understanding, we can aspire to a tomorrow where Israel and its neighbors live in harmony, building a safer and more prosperous future for all. The international community must recognize the threat that Hamas poses not only to Israel but to global stability and work together to foster an environment where peace and security are possible. It is essential that we all educate ourselves appropriately and seek to understand the complexities of this conflict to support a future where peace prevails.

We invite you to continue exploring these topics with us in the first English episode of “What’s Next?” featuring Israel's Minister of Diaspora Affairs, Amichai Chikli, where we will continue to unravel the history and realities of the conflict.
