Understanding Earth Overshoot Day and Our Path to Sustainable Innovation

On July 25th, we will reach Earth Overshoot Day—a symbolic date calculated by the Global Footprint Network that marks when humanity’s demand for ecological resources exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in a year. This concept, which has been tracked since the 1970s, underscores the growing pressure we place on our planet’s natural resources.


Earth Overshoot Day serves as a crucial reminder of the urgent need to adopt more sustainable practices and reduce our ecological footprint. It is essential for us to protect our planet and its resources for future generations. Achieving this requires innovation, particularly through projects spearheaded by individuals, especially the youth, focused on critical areas such as:


  • Natural resource consumption

  • Carbon footprint

  • Ecological debt

  • Biodiversity degradation


These topics are of paramount importance to everyone, as we strive to address the environmental challenges we face.


Our constant connection with machines poses a significant issue. Today, we have more devices that consume energy than those that produce it. This imbalance is particularly disadvantageous for those with fewer resources. In her document "100 Campaign Bells for Transformation," Claudia Sheinbaum, a presidential candidate for Mexico, highlights the challenge of accelerating the energy transition while ensuring no energy shortages and fair pricing for all. Similarly, candidate Xochitl Galvez advocates for the closure of fuel-producing plants to address these issues.
