What Is Happening with Medications in Mexico? An In-Depth Analysis of the Shortage

The shortage of medications in Mexico has reached critical levels, taking the lives of thousands, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children. This situation is unacceptable and must be addressed with the urgency it deserves.

Since the victory of Morena in the 2018 presidential elections, the landscape of access to medications in Mexico has changed dramatically. One of the most significant changes was the decision by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's government to centralize the purchase of medications in order to combat corruption and reduce costs. However, by eliminating the intermediation of distributors and attempting to make direct purchases from laboratories, significant obstacles have arisen that have hindered the efficient acquisition and distribution of essential medications.

Impact of the Shortage

The result of these policies has been devastating. Millions of patients, especially those with chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes, have faced health challenges due to a lack of medications. Numerous deaths and significant deterioration in patients' health have been reported due to a lack of access to necessary treatments.

Attempts at Solutions and Mixed Results

Although the government has attempted to alleviate the crisis by importing medications from countries such as Argentina and India, and through agreements with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), these efforts have had limited success. The shortage persists in many areas, exacerbating the health crisis in the country.

In this episode of "WHAT'S NEXT?", we feature Cristóbal Thompson, an expert with over 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, who offers his perspective on this catastrophe in the health sector in Mexico. His analysis will help us better understand the causes and possible solutions to this issue affecting millions of Mexicans.

The current situation demands a thorough review and determined action to ensure that all Mexicans have access to the medications they need to live with health and dignity.
