ILAN Awards for University Innovation in Guatemala



Celebrating the Innovators of Tomorrow!

Israel + Latin American Network had the honor of presenting the ILAN Awards 2024, recognizing university students from Guatemala for their projects aimed at changing the world.

This year, more than 80 proposals from seven universities were evaluated, and during an inspiring ceremony at Francisco Marroquín University, we awarded creativity and social commitment.

The event featured special attendees from ILAN leadership in the region:

  • Mario Nathusius, CEO of ILAN Guatemala

  • Tobias Schifter, MD, FACR, CEO of ILAN USA

  • Rina Gitler Weingarten, CEO of ILAN Mexico

  • Monica Nagel, CEO of ILAN Costa Rica

We were also joined by the 2023 awardees, who shared their experiences and testimonies about their trip to Israel, inspiring the new winners who will soon have this unique opportunity in the Israeli innovation ecosystem.

Winning Projects:

  1. Ceniza de Bagazo de Caña de Azúcar (University of the Valley of Guatemala)An innovative construction material inspired by lunar regolith, recycling agricultural waste to reduce environmental impact.

  2. BioPhoenis (University of the Valley of Guatemala)A process for extracting silicon dioxide from sugarcane bagasse ashes, transforming a waste product into a valuable item.

  3. Zero Waste Tank (Rafael Landívar University)An anaerobic tank that converts organic waste into renewable resources for agro-industries and rural communities.

  4. Sembrando Esperanza (Rafael Landívar University)A solidarity project that helps vulnerable communities gain access to drinking water and food.

  5. CLEB (Galileo University)A biobased disinfectant with bacteriophages, safer and more ecological than traditional cleaners.

  6. SIMAT (Galileo University)A monitoring and early warning system for rivers, helping to prevent environmental risks.

  7. ECOBIN (Panamerican University)An intelligent waste separation system using object recognition technology to promote recycling.

  8. Analysis of Obstetric Ultrasounds with AI (Panamerican University)Diagnostic technology for rural areas, facilitating access to medical care.

The winning teams received the ILAN Award sculpture, and one member from each team will travel to Israel in 2025 to explore the Israeli innovation ecosystem. Additionally, they will have access to personalized consulting through the ILAN Network, a platform to connect with other innovators and entrepreneurs in Latin America and Israel.
